Feathered Friends

The long awaited season of spring has finally arrived. The temperatures are warming up and my yard is filled with birds.

Early in spring the Goldfinches begin to change into their summer coats. For a spell they look like this, not fully changed to the brighter color and a little mottled.

The Dark-eyed Juncos arrive in droves. These birds are not brightly coloured, but they fill the air with their cheerful twittering.

Purple Finches come back into this area. The brightly coloured male is a joy to see at the feeder. Before long this one will be joined by more makes and shortly after that the duller coloured females arrive as well.

I came home one day as the sun was getting ready to set and noticed the lichen on the Maple tree. The trunk was wet with sap and the late day sun cast a beautiful light on this.

Of course,I had to get in for a closer look. The intricate detail of the lichen is so pretty.

Closing Thought:
God bless you and utterly satisfy your heart with Himself.

  1. Glad you are enjoying Spring! We wake up to the sound of many happy sounding birds singing. Our Blue birds babies and the Wren babies have flown away. We still have Flying Squirrels in two bluebird nest boxes! Love your pictures!

  4. Lovely post of the birds. I love to see them returning, too. The little finches amuse me with their little call "Why? Why?" I always tell them "I don't know why." Now I'm talking to the birds!!! Diane

  13. Those last two pictures are quite creative.... Wow!!!! BUT--the little birds caught my attention. We only have Juncos here during a very very cold winter when it snows... SO--we haven't seen them here the past couple of years since it wasn't 'that' cold.,.

    Great post...
    Hugs,

  17. Ruth Lovely to see the close ups of the tree bark. I was walking with a friend in a wood today at Mount Stewart adn both of us commented that most people do not look at the small details of nature eg bark on trees. I love you bird shots.

  18. Ruth, such pretty images! We are very lucky here as all those birds stay with us for the winter! The Juncos will soon be leaving. I think they go north for the summer and come back to us in Fall!
