Babies to Baths

August is upon us and that means we have about one more month of summer heat before we move into the cooler days of fall. Before we rush ahead into this last full month of summer, let's take a step back and enjoy some early summer scenes.

Back, near the end of June, baby ducklings are to be seen in many places. This Mama Wood Duck and her little family were contentedly swimming in the pond at St. Vital Park.

The male Mallard looks as proud as ever.

Sometimes you just have to give those wings a good workout.

The Canada Goose is making sure every little inch of him is getting washed. They really get into this bathing ,churning up the water with their wings.

Give those wings a few more flaps, just to make sure all is clean.

At the end of a vigorous bath the wings are given a workout, shaking some of that water off the feathers.I find it quite amusing to watch this whole process.

Closing Thought:
Don’t think about what can happen in a month.
Don’t think about what can happen in a year.
Just focus on the 24 hours in front of you and do what you can to get closer to where you want to be.

  1. I have never seen a wood duck. I know they are gorgeous!! My, this one had a lot of babies!! Your Mallard picture is beautiful! We have lots of Canada Geese, but I don't think I have ever seen one bathe. Very cool.

  2. I've seen the Canada geese do this before. And, if you miss the show, you can see the aftermath in all the little feathers floating on the water. :) Great captures, Ruth.

  20. Hi Ruth, I knew I was going to love this post when I saw the title. :-) You have done a great job of capturing the happiness these little birds live with every day. Humans can learn a lot by watching wild animals and you have an excellent ability to catch them in action. Love the shot of the baby ducklings. And the last three shots … the Canada Goose … your captions are right on! Thanks for taking us back for some summer scenes. And that Closing Thought … I need to print that out and place it somewhere so I can see it first thing every morning. Just great! Thanks, as always, for sharing. Wishing you a fine week ahead. I’m wondering when school starts in Morden? Take good care Ruth!

  21. i love your ducks ... so cute ... they really have style. i don't really enjoy geese... why ... let me explain when we 1st started dating there was several picking on a little baby duck ... so we grabbed him/her up and took the little guy to the wildlife center hoping he made ... poor little duck ... i didn't understand why 3 adult geese would try and hurt one little baby duck? so mean of them. not sure. can't we all get along? you know what i mean?
