The Canada Goose

The Canada Goose has become a familiar sight around here. When I was growing up, we would see those huge "V" formations in the sky in spring and again in fall, but rarely did we see the geese during the summer. Now they are everywhere, even in busy cities. If they have water and a place to make a nest, they will make themselves at home.

To me those first goose calls are a sign that spring is right around the corner.

Some folks don't like them, and I will agree, they leave a mess wherever they are, but I think there is something beautiful about them.

I could not see a nest here, but I do think it was probably hidden in the reeds.

These birds become very protective of their nests and later the young.

Upon landing, there is nothing better than to stretch out those powerful wings.

I enjoy watching this, and of course capturing it with my camera.

I am not sure if this was supposed to be a nesting platform, but these two used it as a place to relax.

Whether you like these birds or not, they are resilient and will make themselves at home almost anywhere.

God cares for the birds and that includes the Canada Geese.

I remember in Colorado there was an over population of the same. They were everywhere. So many they captured them and moved 'em elsewhere... Thing is, don't they realize the geese fly?!!?

Lol.

Great series of photos Ruth.

No geese at my altitude, though plenty in Denver, and I think even at Lake Dillon which isn't too far from me, there are geese. I remember biking the rec path in Denver and having them rush out with wings spread warning me from their nest or young. Your photos are are so serene.

Hi Ruth, Thanks for the interesting photos of the Canada Geese. I see a lot of these birds here in Seattle and you are so right, they are beautiful. I see them on the trail along our waterfront where I have been doing daily walks. They do not seem to be afraid of people. I just now looked back on some of your posts through April 26th. Wow, wonderful sunsets and great nature photography. Thank you for sharing your photography and encouraging words. Hope you have a great week ahead! John

As you know, I love watching them, and we miss them now that they have left our pond for the bigger lake. I would love to see the goslings and see how big they are getting, but they are hard to find from our vantage point as there are too many houses around that lake for us to get a good view. We sure did enjoy watching them here for the winter. They really didn't make any mess on our yard either, for which I was thankful!! Love your pictures! You have an excellent camera!! (and a good eye!!)

They ARE beautiful, Ruth, but their numbers make them somewhat distasteful. Nicely captured by your talented photography, though.

We have them everywhere and they are a bit of a pest, but I think they are beautiful birds. I love seeing them fly in V-formation calling out in the autumn, especially. They are here year-round.

There is just something about them. I never saw them as I grew up...just every now and then way up high in the sky. So they are sort of magic to me. But oh, how I love to hear them in the fall. I like to hear them any time, but in the fall is the favorite. Sort of sad and lonely.

We have some around, but it is like they have changed their flight path and we don't see even half as many as we did for years.

There is something so majestic about the Canadian Goose.
I love watching them and do have to agree that they can be very, very messy and protective of their territory.
Great photos, Ruth.
